Carly Rae Jepsen

The hottest Canadian export since poutine (sorry Justin Bieber fans) packed the Gothic Theatre Saturday night. Carly Rae Jepsen is out on a mission to prove that she’s more than a “one hit single.” The elder spokeswoman on all things teeny bop has laid low since “Call Me Maybe.” Sure, the pop icon has collaborated with the Knocks and Owl City for one offs, but three years passed with a follow up to the colossal second album, “Kiss.” Jepsen took a large departure from insipid puppy love to a more substantive delivery on “Emotion.” The “Call Me Maybe” star honed in on the next step in songwriting growth, especially seen with her collaboration with Cardigans’ ringleader, Peter Svensson, on “I Really Like You.”

The global icon handled the heavily sold out Gothic Theatre with ease and took an all business approach to Saturday night’s appearance. Even with the level of comfort Carly exhibited, the pop star wears a blue collar approach to fame not seen in many stars. The perfect next door type that isn’t complete far gone or out of touch with fans. People of all ages stomped and clapped through a sugary set of top 40 hits.
